FVO1: European traders came to India with the arrival of Vasco da Gama in 1498 in search of the spice trade. After the 1757 Battle of Plassey, during which the British army under Robert Clive defeated the Nawab of Bengal, the British East India Company established itself. This was the beginning of the British Raj in India. (LOUD) The Company gained administrative rights over Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa in 1765 after the Battle of Buxar. (BACK TO NORMAL VOLUME) They then annexed Punjab in 1849 after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
