Worker: I was on my way to the main house.
Farmer: It was about 9 o’clock at night.
Worker: About 4 in the afternoon.
Farmer: Totally dark. I heard a noise outside and I went to look.
Worker: Baas Johannes came out.
Farmer: I saw a figure approach.
Worker: He called…
Farmer: I called to him, there was no reply.
Worker: And I replied: “It’s me Bass Johannes”.
Farmer: I could see that he was holding a gun in his hand.
Worker: I had the spanner I used to fix the wind pump… I even showed it to Baas Johannes.
Farmer: I saw him point it at me. I fired a warning shot into the ground.
Worker: He shot me in the stomach. I fell down. I was screaming “no, please Baas Johannes, don’t shoot, it’s me - Sipho”.
Farmer: He kept coming, you understand, I saw the gun. I had to shoot again. It was self defence, pure and simple.
Worker: I thought I was going to die.

Brief Explanation
In post-Apartheid South Africa, differences between black and white are still evident. Most inter-racial conflict can be traced back to misunderstanding, and this spot for a local television show demonstrates how simple differences can have unfortunate outcomes. We achieved this by placing the white Farmer’s side of the story on one stereo channel and the black Worker’s on the other. Therefore, it’s important for the spot to be played through a stereo system.
