Script in English

FVO: The following letter is a true story of a New Zealand police officer. Names have been changed to protect the people involved.

Policewoman (Caucasian):

A letter to the kidnapper who changed the course of my life.

Why did I have to be the one who witnessed your crime?

It would have been easier to pretend I didn’t see you, or that I couldn’t remember your face. But my conscience told me what I had to do.

Then you threatened me, and tried to stop me from testifying.

How dare you!

Once I overcame my initial fear, your threats only made me stronger, and more determined to go through with it.

As I faced up to you in court, I discovered a new side of myself. Someone who wasn’t going to be intimidated.

And as the trial unfolded, I began to realise I could do more with my life. I could do something that made a difference to others.

Then one day in court, it all clicked in my head: I knew I could be a police officer.

Now you’re behind bars, and I’m in my new career. You made your decision. I made mine.

Constable Harvey
