FVO: The following letter was written by a New Zealand police officer.
Policeman (Asian):
A letter to the president of China, from King Kong.
Your Excellency,
My name is Kin Keung.
My family moved to New Zealand when I was 8 years old. Some people here thought my name was King Kong, so I chose a new name from the dictionary.
As a boy I decided I wanted to become a police officer. I don’t think my dad thought much of that idea.
When I finished school, I still wanted to join the police, but my father wanted me to follow a more traditional Chinese career in business.
I studied psychology, partly because I knew that one day it would be useful in the police.
Then when I graduated, I decided it was time to do what I had wanted to do since I was 13. So I talked to my parents, who were disappointed (you don’t get much further away from a traditional Chinese career, than becoming a Kiwi cop).
Now I am a Constable, one of only a handful of Asian officers representing the growing Asian community in Auckland.
Which is how I met you.
And why I’m writing this. It was an honour to be a member of the core security team during your recent visit to New Zealand.
Who would have thought? I could have been running a business , which would have made my father proud. But as a policeman, I helped to protect the Chinese president. And dad couldn’t be prouder.
Yours sincerely
Constable Charles Ip
