MVO: I've been living in Japan for three years, and I still don’t fit in. 'Cos karaoke just ain’t the same here. They don’t sing Hip hop or Rock. The Japanese sing Minyo - folk songs- and to me it sounds like cats crying...
Here's a traditional favourite:
(Singing) Sushi is so delicious
Slimey sashimi is very nutritious
But the Japanese even eat cows raw
Poor little cows, there should be a law
Japanese meditate in Zen temples
Eating only miso and rice soup, that’s not even bento!
If all I ate was lousy monk food
I’d be a zombie, in a really bad mood
They party on boats in Tokyo Bay
The Tempura Boat is the Japanese way
Geishas dancing all around you and your bosses too
And there’s Frank from marketing, singing in the nude
I can’t leave now even if I wanted to
Trapped here at sea with no rescue
I’ll never fit into the Japanese way
I’ll just float forever here in Tokyo Bay
I’ll just float forever here in Tokyo Bay
ANN: Deep Fried Japan. Harumiya’s Tempura Boats.
Brief Explanation
This radio spot was produced for foreigners living in Japan.
Harumiya is a boat that serves tempura while cruising on Tokyo Sumida River. It has a history of over a hundred years and is a culture unique to Japan. Metaphorically speaking, the tempura boat is as fun as having a party in a child’s playroom.
Everyone is permitted to forget just a little bit of the social manners one acquired when becoming a businessman or businesswoman.
