MVO: Quod...uhhh...quod dicunt...I forget what it is. But there’s this Latin phrase which goes something like: ‘What dumb people say about me doesn’t matter.’ Roughly. But say that in Latin and it does sound impressive. But I’ve forgotten, which is unfortunate and if any one knows it, please tell me, because it one of those phrases that can be pretty handy.

Just a while ago, for example, I was travelling through Southern Italy. And because I was in the area, I drove onto the ferry and went over to Stromboli, which is a quaint little volcano, pretty active, on the island by the same name.

So I drove up to the top, to the edge of the crater, I’m not really into walking, and it probably would have been too hot anyway. You know, like ‘hot’ in the original sense of the word.

Anyway, I have to tell you, it was a wonderful excursion. Because Stromboli did have a good day. There was a lot going on, with all the lava and the...what’s the other stuff called that comes out of volcanoes? I forgot. In any case, it was spectacular. I was in the middle of it, like front row centre. Quite cosy really, sitting in your car when it’s raining rocks outside.

So I’m sitting there nice and peacefully, enjoying the view, and all of a sudden this woman walks up to me...some kind of police, emergency service, fire department – who knows? And that was when I really could have used that Latin phrase, with the ‘What dumb people say…’ that it doesn’t bother me, because, I really would have dissed her with that one, hysterical goose.

Because she was like, flipping out, in her space-age heat-proof astronaut...suit. Ridiculous. ‘I have to leave right away, and dangerous and blah blah blah, what am I – tired of life’ if I understood her correctly. Quite unfriendly, really.

Seriously! And I’m thinking the whole time: She should be happy there are any tourists there. I mean like, come on.

ANN: Quod...äh...quod dicunt...ich krieg’s nicht mehr zusammen. Es gibt da dieses lateinische Sprichwort, was so viel heißt wie: „Was die Dummen über mich sagen, ist mir egal“, sinngemäß. Nur halt auf Latein – und deswegen natürlich gleich um einiges souveräner. Aber ich hab’s vergessen...was schade ist! Wenn’s jemand weiß, bitte sagen. Weil, man könnt’s so oft brauchen.

Erst neulich wieder, zum Beispiel, war ich da in Süditalien unterwegs. Und weil ich grad in der Gegend war, bin ich dann mit dem Auto übergesetzt zum Stromboli – netter kleiner Vulkan, recht aktiv – auf der gleichnamigen Insel gelegen.

Ich bin dann mit dem Auto hochgefahren, da zum Rand vom Krater, weil zu Fuß gehen is’ auch nicht so meins, und es wär mir dann vielleicht auch doch zu – na ja – „heiß“ gewesen...In des Wortes ursprünglichster Bedeutung.

Jedenfalls muss ich sagen: Der Ausflug hat sich rentiert. Weil, der Stromboli hat einen guten Tag erwischt. Da war ordentlich was geboten, mit Lava und...wie heißt dieses andere, was auch immer aus Vulkanen kommt? Hab ich vergessen. Jedenfalls ein Spektakel. Und ich also mittendrin, quasi auf’m Logenplatz. Kann richtig gemütlich sein, drinnen im Auto, wenn’s draußen Steine regnet.
Und wie ich da friedlich sitz’ und die Aussicht genieße, kommt plötzlich so eine Tante daher von...irgendwie Polizei, italienisches THW, Feuerwehr...was weiß ich. Und jetzt hätt ich ihn eben wieder gut brauchen können, diesen Spruch. Das mit dem Was die Dummen sagen...dass einen das nicht stört, weil, damit hätt ich sie schön abfahren lassen können – diese hysterische Gans!

Weil, die hat einen Aufstand gemacht, in ihrem hitze – dings – beständigen Astronautenanzug, glaublich. Ich soll sofort da weg und gefährlich und überhaupt und von wegen lebensmüde, wenn ich das richtig verstanden hab...Also richtig unfreundlich!

Echt! Wo ich mir dann denk: Die soll doch froh sein, wenn überhaupt Touristen kommen. Ist doch wahr.

Brief Explanation
In a series of stories, somebody tells us what happened to him while driving his car. The situations are quite bizarre – and above all highly dangerous: Accidentally being pulled up thirty metres by a crane hook, for example. Nevertheless the narrator always stays extraordinarily calm – which is due to the car he is sitting in: Relax. It’s the new Polo.

The stories were also available as a podcast on the Volkswagen page. From there, they spread virally throughout the web, and they were also sent via e-mail to customers just after they had test-driven a Polo.
