Brief Explanation

Abused women in South Africa don’t and often can’t talk about their abuse. POWA’s Women’s Writing Competition offers abused women so much more than just prizes, it offers them a chance to speak out and begin the healing process.

Our idea came from one lady’s account from entering last year’s competition: 'Writing about my abuse was difficult, but it honestly made me feel much better, like I was going through a healing process as I wrote’. As punching fists turn into the punching of keys on a typewriter, POWA shows that the transition from violence to healing can be made.
