The Department of Health is to launch a TV campaign timed for Halloween featuring a young girl who is scared of her mother dying from smoking.

Tonight's 30-second TV ad, created by advertising agency Miles Calcraft Briginshaw Duffy (MCBD), is the latest stage of the NHS' Smokefree campaign.

This latest phase of the campaign, which kicked-off in June, shows the potential impact of smoking on the lives of impressionable children.

The TV breaking tonight, called Scared, opens in a dark bedroom with a young girl saying: "I'm not scared of the dark."

Further scenes feature other objects of children's fear – including spiders and clowns – with the young girl saying in each instance that she is not scared of any of them.

The ad ends with a group of young mums chatting, with the girl saying: "I'm scared of my mum smoking. I'm scared that my mum will die."

Then the ad closes by pointing out that 2,000 people die each week from smoking-related diseases.

The TV campaign is timed to run in the early evening when parents and children are likely to be watching together.

The aim is to promote the NHS Stop Smoking Service, which includes a phone number for a smoking helpline.

Previous TV ads have featured children mimicking the smoking habits of their parents set to famous kids songs including I Wanna Be Like You from the Jungle Book and Shirley Temple's On Account'a I Love You.

Brief: The Peruvian League of fight against cancer, asks us to create a campaign for the no-smoker day in which we had to emphasis the damage that a person who smokes causes on his family, friends and all the people around him.


Idea: Using 15000 cigarette butts, glued together one by one in an outdoor palel, level to the sidewalk, we dramatized the treat that cigarettes represent for a non-smoking person, in this case, a little girl.


A month and a half before the campaign, with the help of many volunteers, we were able to gather 15,000 cigarette butts. An artist was in charge of pasting them together and to maintain the essence if the original idea, he painted the little girl in oit painting.

Synopsis
Big Tobacco labels their cigarettes with things like ultra-light, light, and low-tar, even though they can be as deadly and addictive as regular cigarettes. Offering a light death alternative must be standard procedure in the world of deadly product marketing. So, by this logic, gun companies must offer a light bullet... maybe one that just hits someone but doesn't harm them. Recent research has shown a startling increase in cases of impotency caused by smoking. The task was to find a less patronizing approach to bring this piece of information to smokers who have become blasé with the shock values preached by most anti-smoking campaigns. The idea for this aid rides on the classic and common perception that people with no children always rear a lot of cats. You see this stereotype in movies or in storybooks all the time.
