Resistance 2: Graduation BBQ

The ad promotes PS3's highly anticipated Resistance 2. It was created via TBWA, London, and breaks worldwide today, on TV, in theatres, and on the Web. This marks Sutherland's second project for PlayStation's Resistance game, having helmed the launch campaign.

Set at a front yard "Graduation Party", circa 1952, the spot opens on a hopeful and celebratory note. Without warning, the mood is shattered by arrival of alien invaders - the neighborhood is under attack, and joy is replaced with sheer terror. The action is captured on camera with a rough-and-tumble style, and a frenetic energy that maintains the spot's realism. The aliens are glimpsed by the filmmaker, and the mystery makes the scene all the more frightening. Townspeople scramble for cover and search for some means of resistance. Amidst the madness and anarchy, the cameraman trips over and hits the ground... The footage burns out and bubbles. There's a slight whirl of the projector, the film ends, and the game play footage begins.

"Graduation Day" has the aged, yellowing hue of Super 8 film, and to enhance the home movie feel Sutherland composed his shots as one might a portrait or a landscape. "We wanted the actors to seem a bit stiff and awkward in front of the camera," Sutherland said. "We wanted to capture the feel of an All-American scene that was believable and typical of the day." According to Joyrider EP Spencer Friend, the production was going to shoot in Levittown, New York, but practical considerations resulted in a UK shoot. Watching the completed spot, with its American cars and retro-suburban vibe, one would never know the filmmakers created Middle-America in Surrey, England. "Our art department deserves a lot of credit," said Friend.

Sutherland, who also cut the spot, explained that he did not want it to feel like a professionally edited film. Achieving an amateur look - from the camerawork to the editorial - was critical. "Whoever is shooting this is not going to become a professional DP just because the house across the street has just been wiped out by aliens!" he mused.
To realise those aliens, Joyrider - which did all the 3D, compositing and FX in-house - re-modelled and animated the alien characters from the game, and lit them for maximum authenticity. "The camera doesn't focus on the spaceships and aliens, which actually heightens the reality and intensifies the reactions of the townspeople," said Sutherland. "Ultimately, this spot is about how they decide to fight back against the annihilation." "Reuben enjoys playing with film styles and period looks - if a film's got dirt and grit on it, he's in," Friend said, "so I knew he'd respond to this board." Sutherland concurred, saying, "I do love a good dirty film."

Supermodel Heidi Klum is shown dancing around in lacy black lingerie in an ad campaign to launch the latest 'Guitar Hero' video game in a homage to the famous underwear scene in Tom Cruise's 'Risky Business'.

Model appears in the global ad backing the release of Activision's 'Guitar Hero World Tour', which hits the UK on November 7.

In the ad, Klum is shown lip-syncing to Bob Seger's 'Old Time Rock and Roll', while dancing around the living room with the wireless guitar controller, after stripping to her underwear at the start of the commercial.

The bold, eye-popping ad was shot on location at the Salton Sea, where stunt drivers/fliers were dropped from real airplanes, with sky-diving cameramen capturing the action.

"Our mission was to synchronize the sky-divers and their drops so they would appear closer together than was the case in camera," explained Executive Producer Baptiste Andrieux of Eight VFX, which previously collaborated with Obermeyer on 2007's Bank of America "Hiker". "To do so practically would have taken the stunts to an impractical level."

Of course, "Air Raid" is an ad for PS3's Motorstorm 2, and as such it needed to convey a sense of the impractical while maintaining the visual authenticity of stunts executed by some of the best sky-divers in the world. To heighten the drama (no pun intended), Eight VFX created CG envinronments, airplanes, motor vehicles, and jumpers to populate the shots on top of the live action stuntmen.

"When we took this on, we said we'd be happy if this played as something that looks completely real but feels like it could and should only happen in a videogame," said Andrieux. "Watching the spot unfold, I think we succeeded."

Objective:
Halo3 is the third game in the Xbox exclusive Halo franchise. Every Halo launch has been a big event amongst the gamer audience, but the client wanted Halo3 to be more: an entertainment landmark. The Halo 3 'Believe' campaign idea sought to reposition the protagonist of the Halo series as the hero and saviour of mankind. We built a vision of a future world, looking back on the events of the Halo wars, and humanity's victory. Our specific task was to run a promotion in-cinemas, to engage consumers with the content of Halo 3 and build a true cultural connection.

Development:
The concept was to extend the 'Museum of Humanity' advertising idea, by creating a war photographer, Jake Courage, who had been stationed on the front lines in the Halo wars. We then exhibited a selection of his photos, which show the emotion and power of the story and action in Halo 3, both physically in cinemas across Britain and online. We also shot & ran a short documentary on his life and work, again in cinemas and at www.jakecourage.com.

Relevance:
The real competitive advantage for a game in a cinema environment is that it has a deeper and richer story than any film, taking 30 or 40 hours to explore the world of Halo 3. So we felt it appropriate to add character and events to the Halo world by inventing the Jake Courage character for our promotion, a "real" human with a biography featured in the official Halo wiki. In particular, we wanted to reward people coming across our activity with new and interesting content, not a marketing message. And the use of www.jakecourage.com allowed people to do this globally.

Outcome/Results:
By repurposing visuals from the TV campaign, the additional client investment in the Jake Courage campaign was minimal, limited to actually building the infrastructure of the campaign. On a total budget of Ј10,000, we know that we reached XXX people in cinemas, including a few light-fingered fans who stole the photography from the walls. PR across online & offline titles has also helped drive site traffic past 11,000 unique users globally, a figure still growing for a true long tail campaign, with an average dwell time still of over 3 minutes.

Kidman plays the game for Nintendo

Moulin Rouge star Nicole Kidman is to front a pan-European TV ad campaign for Nintendo.

The campaign, which breaks in the UK tonight at 7.45pm on ITV1, shows the Australian actor playing the More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima: How Old is Your Brain? game.

Kidman is seen "training her brain" by memorising numbers and completing exercises. Her "brain age" in years is revealed at the end of the ad. A player's brain age can be anything from 20 to 80 years.

The TV campaign will be supported by press ads and aims to promote the game on the handheld Nintendo DS device.

More Brain Training is a follow-up to the first version of the game, which launched last summer.

The game is one of a series of skills and learning-based titles that Nintendo has developed under the banner Touch! Generations.

"I love the concept that Nintendo is reaching out to new audiences with self-improvement products like Brain Training," said Kidman.

Nintendo said Kidman was chosen to front the campaign because "her personality and ability to combine the world of film with a family-centric home lifestyle was felt to be a strong fit with the Nintendo DS".

The new software title, to be launched this Friday, is part of Nintendo's strategy to challenge the commonly held perception that gaming is the preserve of 16- to 24-year-old males who prefer to play violent "shoot 'em up" games.
