Describe the brief from the client:
MyToys.de is one of Germany’s largest online toy stores. The task was to advertise LEGO, one of the company’s leading products, with an innovative campaign. Many people should be guided to the website where LEGO brick boxes are sold.
Describe how the promotion developed from concept to implementation:
We implemented an interactive outdoor promotion that was as playful as LEGO itself. Therefore we utilized QR Codes, which are increasingly popular in Germany. They are able to encrypt all kinds of information, including web-links. Three-dimensional and colourful QR Codes were built by hand - using real LEGO bricks! Curious passers-by could crack a LEGO Code, simply by taking a picture with the QR Reader of their cell phone. The decoded message suggested one of many imaginative possibilities that could be built with the LEGO bricks used in the code that people were standing in front of!
Describe the success of the promotion with both client and consumer including some quantifiable results:
The LEGO codes were linked to success. Online tracking showed, that 49% of all online visitors at the LEGO Sites from myToys were achieved through our campaign. And compared to the non-advertised LEGO products from myToys, the LEGO brick boxes sold twice as much! Our campaign aroused people’s playfulness and opened their minds to the imaginative world of LEGO.
Explain why the method of promotion was most relevant to the product or service:
myToys.de is an online toys retailer. On one hand, we had to lead people to the website, and on the other hand we wanted to amaze and involve them in the offline world at highly frequented places in German cities. By using the colourful and stunning patterns of real LEGO we caught the consumer'sattention. And, because these patterns were QR Codes, we were able to guide them to the website where they could buy a LEGO brick box. Therefore, each decoded message included a web-link, with which the corresponding brick box could be ordered directly from the myToys.de

Everyone has something to hide.

That’s the theme for the third season of Big Love on HBO. And it’s also the idea behind new interactive murals created to promote the show by BBDO-NY. These murals, launching in New York and Los Angeles the week of January 5th, feature snapshots of people walking through a city street. Headphone jacks are built into each person’s head, so that passersby can use their headphones (or those provided by street teams) to plug in and hear each person in the mural’s inner and most personal secrets. These secrets range from the innocuous (i.e., a woman who’s in love with her boss) to the dramatic (i.e., a woman who is hiding her drinking problem from her husband or a man who is planning to leave his pregnant wife for someone else).

In addition, when people plug into the headphone jack near the logo, they can hear a trailer made up from some of the most dramatic clips of the upcoming season, in which secrets abound amongst all the main characters.

Big Love’s season kicks off on January 18, 2009.

Saatchi & Saatchi has transformed a number of UK bus shelters into interactive games based on a fairground stall, where travellers can bash Cadbury Creme Eggs.

The agency, which released new TV ads for the brand at Christmas, has created a game which turns the shelters into touch-screen fairground stalls.

Travellers must bash as many digital falling eggs as possible in 20 seconds, in order to release their goo.

The 10 heated shelters, primarily in downtown Chicago locations like Michigan Avenue and State Street, will have posters that read: “Cold, provided by winter. Warmth, provided by Stove Top.” The posters will also appear on 40 other bus shelters that will not have heated roofs.

Kraft is arranging for the company that builds and maintains the bus shelters, JCDecaux North America, to heat them, trying to bring to life the warm feeling that consumers get when they eat stuffing, according to Kraft.

Such “experiential marketing” is intended to entice consumers to experience products or brands tangibly rather than bombard them with pitches.

To get people connected with the San Francisco Zoo, BBDO West in SF created a multi-media campaign called "Critter Quest".
People stand in front of a series of local bus shelters and postings at the zoo, which are playfully adorned with everything from horns to butterfly wings and oversized ears. The copy suggests having a friend take a picture of you in front of the bus shelter/postings, and then instructs you to load on the OurSFZoo website . If you’re creative enough, your image might end up in a print ad for the San Fran Zoo’s attempt to reconnect with locals and visitors. Thousands have submitted photos so far – we’re interested in seeing how creative people will get.

The Department of Environment and Conservation wanted to show their appreciation to people who were doing their bit for the planet by taking public transport to and from work. Agency Marketforce Perth set up a number of these applauding bus shelters in high traffic areas around the CBD. Motion sensors in the shelter triggered a recorded applause whenever someone entered.

The Department of Environment and Conservation wanted to show their appreciation to people who were doing their bit for the planet by taking public transport to and from work. Agency Marketforce Perth set up a number of these applauding bus shelters in high traffic areas around the CBD. Motion sensors in the shelter triggered a recorded applause whenever someone entered.

Innovative Media Strategy:
During the autumn of 2007 a new pension election for young, privately employed workers took place. The challenge was to find media that were not only brand building but also action-generating. By looking at the target audience's media usage, we decided to focus on a campaign with the mobile phone as the primary communication channel for interaction. The more conventional media channels focussed on marketing the usage of the mobile phone.

Creative Execution:
TV ads: Famous young Swedish people, portrayed as seniors, invited you to send an MMS text message with your picture in order to see how you might look as retired. Banners and outdoor posters were also used to spread the message. One part of the outdoor campaign used a technique called 'Lenticular printing', which made the face on the poster change from young to old depending on which angle you were watching it from. In addition to using the mobile phone, you could upload your picture at a website - and also look at other people's transformations in a gallery.

Target Audience:
The primary target audience for the election consisted of young, privately employed workers living in big city regions. Focus groups showed that their interest in their pension funds were more than limited. By analysing their lifestyle and media habits we found that they were active and interactive persons. Their interests were focussed on social activities where friends and networking is important. They are used to new technology and it is a natural part of the their upbringing. Internet and the mobile phone has been with them since they were teenagers and plays an important part in their lives.

Effectiveness:
322,946 pictures sent via MMS. Goal exceeded by 546%. Doubled number of visitors at campaign site. Advertising awareness increased by 33%. Preference of AMF quadrupled during campaign. Awarded 'Best Mobile Campaign in the World' at Global Mobile Awards in February 2008.

NedBank's 'Power to the People' campaign from Network BBDO in South Africa won the outdoor Grand Prix.

The 2007 Outdoor Grand Prix went to a campaign that quite literally gave power to the people. Network BBDO, Johannesburg, took home the top prize in outdoor for a solar-powered billboard for NedBank that provided some juice to local buildings.


Jury deliberation
In the last hour and half of deliberation, the jury flip-flopped between the South African agency's work and a campaign for BBC World created by BBDO, New York, that featured a single photo of soldiers on a Times Square billboard. The outdoor project allowed passers-by to vote via text message whether they though the soldiers pictured were occupiers or liberators. The billboard kept a running tally of the votes.

"We were torn between the head and the heart," said Porky Hefer, outdoor jurist and executive creative director at Lowe Bull, Cape Town. "Sometimes you get overwhelmed by the technology, but you have to get back to the idea."

What ultimately swayed the jury in the favor of the NedBank "Power to the People" work was that the solar power being collected by the billboard was helping to power several community buildings, including a schoolhouse. That the work made a difference in the community made all the difference to the jury.

Work that 'continues providing'
At a time when it is so common to have short-term promotions, that the "work that continues to work and continues providing" was key, said jury chair Jean-Remy Von Matt, founder-chairman, Jung Von Matt, Hamburg.

There was a strong sense from the jury that corporate responsibility and advertising that supports social responsibility is the example they would like to stress for future creatives.

"This one piece was more than advertising. It was help and it was hope," Mr. Hefer said. "The results and the winners have a big impact on [the creative] youth and they copy the star [we award]. If we award ads that have guns and mayhem, those will be the ads that we will start seeing."
