Describe the brief from the client
As a design and communications company that has its office situated within the art district of Mumbai, we took it upon ourselves to create a product that would help tourists discover the numerous galleries in and around the area. The brief was to come up with a map that would not only be informative, but showcase Indian graphic styles and have keepsake value.

Describe the challenges and key objectives
Indian art is extremely diverse and the challenge was to pick a style that was unique to India, yet recognised globally.

Describe how you arrived at the final design
Old Victorian horse carriages ply only around the South Mumbai art district. They have a distinct identity that exemplifies kitsch. The graphics and illustrations used on the map are created by borrowing elements and designs found on these carriages. The lights, bright colours and over the top decoration found on these carriages provided the inspiration for the final design.

Give some indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
The product was exhibited to artists, gallerists and a selection of the media fraternity before its official launch. The feedback we received was positive, with a lot of enquiries and pre-orders before it was even out in the market. The product is currently being stocked at exclusive bookstores, galleries and cafes around the city.
