Describe the brief from the client
In September 2010, writer, journalist and professor of journalism Dan Sinker spoke to our agency as part of our salon series featuring creative people in the community. Our assignment was to design a poster announcing his appearance.

Describe the challenges and key objectives
While Sinker has since gained national notoriety as the mastermind behind @MayorEmanuel, a Twitter account lampooning Rahm Emanuel’s mayoral race, at the time of his visit he was more of an underground figure best known for his work as editor of the defunct magazine Punk Planet. Our main challenge was to pique interest in the event among the many agency employees who had never heard of him.

Describe how you arrived at the final design
This design was inspired by Sinker’s digital literature series, CellStories—short works by a range of authors accessible to subscribers by mobile phone. For our poster, we envisioned what a contemporary bookshelf would look like given the continuous evolution of new media. We highlighted a selection currently in use: a flash drive, a book, a magazine, a CD, a phone. We chose a flip phone over a smartphone to demonstrate how fleeting the new technology is—what was not long ago cutting-edge now appears obsolete. The poster is a celebration of all these platforms keeping company on a cozy bookcase.

Give some indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
The event was well-attended and received good coverage from the local press.
