Describe the brief from the client
In 2011, Fuenfwerken wanted to send out a unique and delightfully multi-layered Christmas present. In celebration of our 10-year collaboration with the maverick winemakers at Tesch, we intended to create a special gift that illustrated in terms of both corporate and packaging design that the whole is much more than the sum of its, perfectly coordinated, individual parts.

Describe the challenges and key objectives
The notion of thinking outside the box forms the basis of our work with the world-class team at the Tesch winery. In fact, we made a conscious decision to break radically with the old-school look and energy of traditional German winemakers. With Tesch’s unique ‘Riesling unplugged’, in particular we achieved the impossible, we created an outstanding wine highly appreciated by international epicures yet also wholeheartedly inspiring to hardened rock fans and musicians.

Describe how you arrived at the final design
We captured this entirely new and unaffected way of life in an exclusive illustrated book with the title ‘Riesling People, Vol. 1.’ It is accompanied by a 10-year anniversary CD called ‘VOL. 2’, which combines the music of Germany’s most celebrated punk rock band, Die Toten Hosen, with readings from leading international sommeliers and letters of complaint from ex-customers, who consider Tesch too brazenly modern. The packaging of our Christmas gift set consisted of several layers of cardboard box maintained entirely in the raw and authentic style of wine rebels. Only Fuenfwerken adhesive tape holds the entire package together.

Give some indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
We just got positive feedback for our unconventional Christmas present from clients who called us personally to thanks to us. Between all the other standardised packages they usually get, our gift was really special and striking, especially with its packaging.
