Describe the brief from the client
Taiwan shapes and regularly recalibrates its cultural and economic life and vision for the future in an ongoing effort to reclaim and sustain the essential harmony between its natural environment and the needs of a dynamic and developing society. This Taiwan exposition pavilion presents homegrown high technology, innovativeness and ecological perspectives in unique ways that are designed to engage and stimulate.

Describe the challenges and key objectives
Planners faced the exciting and challenging task of creatively using Taiwan’s leading edge technologies in a pavilion able to communicate the complex and increasingly rich interactions between the island’s unique natural environment and her modern high-tech and creative industries. Apart from providing an exciting and interactive experience for visitors, pavilion planners looked to use the unprecedented opportunity embodied in this pavilion to make a lasting and positive impact on public opinion leading to a broad-based consensus on the necessity and long-term value of harmony between nature and development.

Describe how you arrived at the final design
The pavilion is a groundbreaking cooperative effort that joined the technical expertise and patented technologies of Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) with nationally renowned artisans. The creative process was an arduous but rewarding path that focused on blending the two into a meaningful creation. The seemingly endless discussions, trial and error, and revisions produced an unprecedented creative interplay that joined the visitor, the artist and the engineer as one in a deeply moving and interactive experience.

Give some indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
Public response to the Pavilion of Dreams has been exceptionally enthusiastic. Lines form daily at the reserved ticket concession from three in the morning. The pavilion has been a regular focus of both local and international media attention. Over 2,000 related articles have been written and over 5,000 minutes of related programming have aired since the pavilion opening five months ago. The Pavilion of Dreams is this year’s most celebrated and successful bridge between Taiwan and the international community.
