Renew Marimekko’s digital flagship: www.marimekko.com

Marimekko's marketing team and Activeark designed Marimekko's new website in close collaboration from concept to implementation.

The publication of the website was in two stages. In the recruitment stage, beginning May 2010, the personal memories of Marimekko were collected from fans of the company. The new website went online in October 2010. Pictures and stories of Marimekko sent in by Marimekko fans formed the backbone of the site launch.

Describe the challenges and key objectives
The aim was to design a website with a modular and multilevel structure, scalable for future needs and to facilitate the inclusion of current campaigns as an integral part of the site.

The starting point for the design was to fit in with Marimekko's new brand position plus a broad-based display of the collections. The visual aspects of the website were planned on the basis of Marimekko's updated graphical identity to be simply stylish so that Marimekko's colourful patterns and products would stand out.

Describe how you arrived at the final design
After analysing the needs and defining the goals for the future site, the Marimekko and Activeark teams worked in close collaboration with iteration phases to reach the final design.

Visitors to the site can check out Marimekko's varied product range by colour, pattern and designer, or curated theme, for instance.

Marimekko´s designers are introduced by personalised designer pages, combining pictures, interviews and products by the designers.

Shop search was implemented with IP address-based recognition to make it easier to find the nearest Marimekko retail outlet.

Give some indication of how successful the outcome was in the market

- In the recruitment stage, Marimekko fans sent in more than 1,500 stories and pictures of themselves.
- Visitor feedback has been positive and visitor count grows strongly and steadily.
