Describe the brief from the client
With a new mandate of being a university, and after 26 years with the institution's current logo, Mount Royal needed to develop a new logo to identity and reflect who Mount Royal is and who they aspire to be. As well, Mount Royal celebrated its centennial in 2010, a significant milestone in the history of education in Alberta, Canada. Mount Royal has been a community-focused institution and an integral part of Calgary's history and development.

Describe the challenges and key objectives
Retain and respect the rich 100 year old history in Canada while communicating an aspirational and inspirational vision for the future of Mount Royal University. The new logo would also have to accommodate and be flexible to address brand architecture of Mount Royal University, which includes several schools/departments which are distinct in their own right.

Describe how you arrived at the final design
The logo is the result of extensive research conducted by Mount Royal, combined with the design expertise and consultation of more than 1,600 students, prospective students, staff, faculty, and various members of University leadership. Our approach involved extensive conceptual exploration, ranging from revolutionary to evolutionary. The key was to combine the rich history of Canada, Mount Royal's "M", and the foundation of education with books.

Give some indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
Gained nearly 100% consensus from various stakeholder groups with a survey conducted by an independent research firm. Today, the new logo is the beacon of this institution and is seen everywhere from t-shirts to websites, to entrance way signage to stationary.
