Describe the challenges and key objectives
“Social Energy—Contemporary Communication Design from the Netherlands” starts with research on Netherlands’ contemporary communication design. It is proceeding with its touring activities in Chengdu, Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai. The top and explorative designers of the exhibition demonstrate the great transformation of Netherlands’ design, European design and the changes from graphic design to communication design. Shenzhen, considered as the new “City of Design”, is one of the key stations for this tour exhibition. The OCT Art & Design Gallery is the location for the Shenzhen exhibition as the first museum positioned at vanguard design in China. It’s a huge challenge to employ the unique visual language to promote the gallery and to enrich the exhibition and the society.

Describe the brief from the client
It promotes that the OCT Art & Design Gallery is the new gallery for design, makes design a social issue and provides people with a communication platform. It’s unique and memorable for the Social Energy Exhibition Shenzhen station.

Describe how you arrived at the final design
The environmental design of “Social Energy” (Shenzhen) employs the characteristic of hexagon on the OCT Art & Design Gallery’s outer wall. We design a unique typeface by integrating the energy structure of a tiny molecule. It shows the gallery’s image and explains the process of energy accumulation with huge red, white and blue gas-filling devices, leading audiences to a sumptuous design feast.

Give some indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
We combine the concept -“social energy” raised by the client and the present condition of design in Shenzhen and call for graphic designers, environmental designers, architects and design lovers to this exhibition. We discuss to enrich the exhibition and deeply influence Shenzhen designers and society. We recode the whole event and share it with others on the Internet.
