Describe the challenges and key objectives
1. To research and understand the heritage of graphic designer Mike Dempsey’s 40-year career. 2. Deliver a clear piece of communication that will motivate and intrigue an internal audience towards Dempsey’s talk.

Describe the brief from the client
Talking Heads are a series of inspirational knowledge share talks held at The Brand Union London. The speakers are high profile professionals of design-relevant backgrounds. 1. To create an engaging piece of communication in poster format that pays tribute to guest speaker Mike Dempsey.

Describe how you arrived at the final design
Mike Dempsey keeps records of everyone he has ever worked with and lists those he admires. He presents his life as simple facts and events. Visually, he values typography and bold, simple ideas. Here, we mix his passion for keeping records of events in his life with his passion for typography. The outcome is a tribute to his career and visual style through a bespoke typeface made out of numerical characters. The idea is emphasised through adding and subtracting key events in his life that in the end equal ‘one’, as if to say there is ‘only one Mike Dempsey’.

Give some indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
Dempsey was thrilled, particularly with his bespoke typeface. Attendance at the event exceeded seating capacity.
