Describe the brief from the client
It is not simply the compliant response to a legal requirement; it is our single most important annual communication. Addressed to multiple audiences, it must inform with the utmost accuracy; it must inspire, celebrate and reward WPP people worldwide; it must make a powerful case to clients, potential clients, analysts and commentators; and in its style, design and writing, must in itself be seen to provide evidence of WPP’s ability to produce creative, persuasive communications.

Describe the challenges and key objectives
Each of WPP’s 150+ companies has its own clear identity, specialist skills and fiercely loyal workforce. What they have in common is this: they all provide hand-tailored work, based on hard graft and highly directed talent, for thousands of demanding clients around the world.

The Annual Report therefore has two major challenges:
1. Present a single face, and a set of easily comprehended figures, for share owners; provide them with the data and the commentary that allows them to make informed judgments of their company’s performance;
2. Reveal and celebrate the huge diversity and creative talent of its component companies.

Describe how you arrived at the final design
The WPP Annual Report & Accounts stands out from the crowd in its presentation and content. Each year, a different illustrator is selected from world economies that are important to the company and its clients and Sir Martin Sorrell gives a comprehensive market overview and outlook. A clear and distinct hierarchy is adopted for clarity of structure and ease of navigation and pages are brought to life by the vibrant illustrations which dictate the colour coding of each section; this is achieved without distracting from the content.
