Describe the brief/objective of the direct campaign.
Our objective was twofold: first, to generate entries for the 2010 FedExCup Global Golf Sweepstakes, and second, to build a sweepstakes entry mechanism that would generate a database of leads for FedEx’s international shipping business.

Our challenge: with its biggest star not playing, professional golf’s TV ratings were expected to be historically low. That meant we’d have to rely less on traditional media to drive sweepstakes entries and more on digital.

Describe the creative solution to the brief/objective with reference to the projected response rates and desired outcome.
The campaign consisted of two parts—advertising that drove customers to our microsite, and an immersive golf game that served as the primary sweepstakes entry method.

The advertising idea was “golf daydreams,” and consisted of TV, print and digital banner ads that played off the insight that golf is the biggest distraction in business. Users could “distract themselves” by playing an immersive golf game answering golf trivia to earn sweepstakes entries. Players could brag on Facebook, challenge friends to play, and keep track of each other’s scores. Entries could also be earned by answering questions on Twitter and in banner ads.

Explain why the creative execution was relevant to the product or service.
The game was a vehicle for FedEx to educate its target consumers about international shipping. And sweepstakes entries were a natural, unobtrusive way to generate a database of potential customers.

Describe the results in as much detail as possible with particular reference to the RESPONSE of the target audience including deliverability statistics, response rates, click throughs, sales cost per response, relationships built and overall return on investment.
In a year where golf’s TV ratings were about 30% lower, we were still able to increase the total visits to our site compared to last year, generating over 440,000 entries, in addition to an increase in email opt-ins for international shipping.
