The Sumatran Orangutan Society is a small charity that helps protect critically endangered Sumatran Orangutans. It relies on lots of small donations as it has a mainly younger supporter base. We were asked to create a fundraising initiative to send to schools and universities. We suggested a poster to illustrate the message that a small amount of money can go a long way. Noticing a correlation between the colour of Orangutans and one penny pieces, we came up with the idea of creating a mosaic of a young Orangutan using nothing but pennies. Instead of constructing it digitally, we physically made it; sorting through over two thousand coins to take advantage of the wide tonal variations found in pennies over the last fifty years. As a result SOS were able to auction the framed artwork for a significant amount of money.
