English Translation of Main Headlines

HAKONE EKIDEN, is the most prominent university ekiden (relay marathon) event held every new year in Japan. The First Ekiden started in 1920, and now has become a cultural tradition to the Japanese audience. In order to gain attention from younger age groups, the concept was to have HAKONE EKIDEN supporters simply write “HAKONE EKIDEN” in KAKIZOME, a traditional Japanese calligraphy art usually writing auspicious words using ink and a brush, for the celebration of the New Year. The 216 KAKIZOMEs strongly attracted attention at Shibuya, the center of young culture, since most Japanese have experienced KAKIZOME in there childhood.
