Synopsis:
Creative Agency Space has designed the Official Championship poster for this year’s Wimbledon championships. The poster commemorates three major broadcasting anniversaries with the BBC: 90 years since the first radio broadcast from The Championships, 80 years since the first television broadcast, and 50 years since the first colour television transmission, which took place on 1 July 1967 under the direction of Sir David Attenborough, the BBC Two controller at the time.
WIMBLEDON CELEBRATES 90-YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BBC THROUGH OFFICAL TOURNAMENT POSTER
22nd June: This year, the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s Official Championships Poster commemorates three major broadcasting anniversaries with the BBC: 90 years since the first radio broadcast from The Championships, 80 years since the first television broadcast, and 50 years since the first colour television transmission, which took place on 1 July 1967 under the direction of Sir David Attenborough, the BBC Two controller at the time.
The iconic work has been designed by Anna Sansom, senior designer at creative agency Space with support and direction from Space’s creative director Greg McAlinden and through collaboration with Ikem Ononiwu, graphic design lead at Wimbledon.
Space was awarded the project on the basis of its successful and highly acclaimed Wimbledon Arrivals work, now in its sixth year.
The poster’s design pays homage to the original television test card and features major broadcasting milestones and iconic figures and images from The Championships’ long history, sourced both from the BBC and from the rich Wimbledon archive, set against the purple and green colours associated with the tournament. These include Freddie Grisewood, one of the first radio commentators, pictured in a radio booth; ‘the voice of tennis’, Dan Maskell, pictured in a recording studio; one of the first broadcast cameras used at Wimbledon; an image of the BBC’s production studio; Sue Barker, the face of the BBC’s TV coverage today; and the changing faces of fans at The Championships. The poster also features the Wimbledon logo and tournament strapline ‘In Pursuit of Greatness’.
The poster will appear around the Grounds during The Championships, sold in the official Wimbledon Shops (both on-site and online), and featured in the official Tournament programme.
Space is also responsible for creating the experiential activity for people arriving to visit The Championships. This is the sixth campaign that Space has developed for Wimbledon but is the first time Space has created new creative materials for inside the Grounds, including a 40-metre long placement on the back of Court 12.
The Official Poster is just one of many celebrations of the broadcasting anniversaries, the headline being a new exhibition from the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum and the BBC, entitled ‘On Air – Wimbledon and the BBC 1927-2017’ which will be open for visitors throughout The Championships.
