The “Words matter” advertising platform by The Gazette was a real success. The challenge of this new campaign was to succeed in approaching things from a new angle. By being more precise, more daily, it made Montreal’s Anglophones realize how important the newspaper was in their community. One morning when they bought their newspaper, they noticed a change on the front page. Removing the word “Gazette” and just keeping the “The” was a strong gesture. It helped prove to what extent The Gazette is an institution in Montreal’s culture. Even without its full name, everyone recognized the newspaper. This communication strategy amused the targeted Anglophone public, and even caught the attention of the Francophone press.
