Describe the brief from the client
Create an exhibition piece to celebrate the upcoming 55th anniversary between partner towns Hamburg and Marseille in 2013. For this unusual event, 55 design agencies from Hamburg were invited to present themselves on a cardboard barrel. The only limitations for the exhibition piece were the weight and height of the barrel. Apart from that, there were no limits to creativity.
Describe the challenges and key objectives
The main challenge was to keep the design as simple as possible because it had to be shipped to Marseille. Nevertheless, it needed to be extraordinary and engaging so it would stand out from the rest of the exhibits. The other challenge was to create awareness and publicity for our agency so we could leave some footprints on an international level: literally.
Describe how you arrived at the final design
Our final design was a print roll atop a barrel, littered with logos and designs we’ve produced over the last 10 years. We added print pads and paper, so people could print themselves a card to take away. This way they were able to take a part of our agency home. The claim ‘ImpriMoi’ (Print Me), should stimulate people to become active. Additionally we produced a handmade poster series, to distribute in the city and in design schools. We decided to frame the pattern on the posters so as to celebrate the roots of design and typography, geometrical shapes and handcraft.
Give some indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
The exhibition was a great success. People used our barrel and many cards were printed and taken home. The posters were very well received by everybody and some people even wanted to buy some.
