FVO: The following letter is a true story of a New Zealand police officer.

Policewoman (Samoan):

A letter to my brother who hated cops.

Hey bro

Isn’t it funny how things turn out?

You know people make choices in life, and life growing up for us wasn’t so easy. It got to the point that as a family we didn’t respect the police.

You know, I finally realised that if I were to succeed, I needed a change in attitude. The world doesn’t owe me anything, I owe it to myself to make the most of what it has to offer. Hopefully you will understand where I am coming from.

Family being in trouble with the law sucks, especially when it has an affect on how people view you and me. Did you know that they held back my application to join the police because of choices you and our other brother made?

Thankfully that’s all in the past. I admire the choices you’ve made in your life since you got out.

It’s been interesting to see how people treat me in my job. I’ve realised that people are different, but at the end of the day we should try to treat each other with respect.

It’s nice to know that you can now look past the uniform and see me as your little sis.

FVO: Everyone has to overcome obstacles to join the police. If you’d like to find out more about a career in the police, call 0800 NEW COPS or visit Are you ready to step up?
