MVO: In the Middle Ages powerful politicians were occasionally subjected to public flaying.

First they would be strung from a scaffold where their arms and legs would be tightly bound. Next, their skin would be scorched with burning sulphur. The torturer would apply a knife and make an incision beneath the skin which would then be peeled off the body with specially made red hot tongs. These days we do exactly the same thing… only with words. The Spectator. Getting under the skin of the election.
