Script in English

Priest: Repeat after me, I, Sherine Fernandopulle, take thee, Jude Vithanage to be my lawfully wedded husband.

Bride: I, Sherine Fernandopulle, take thee, Jude Vithanage to be my lawfully wedded husband.

Priest: To have and to hold from this day forward,

Bride: to obey your every whim, accept with resignation, your drunken abuse,

Priest: for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,

Bride: For all your sexual demands, however unreasonable they may be,

Priest: in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish,

Bride: in fear and humiliation, through beatings and bruises, cigarette burns and black eyes, hiding all this from the world,

Priest: till death do us part.

Bride: till death do us part.

FVO: Domestic violence is not part of your marital vows. If you are a victim or a witness, call our Women In Need hotline 4718585
Brief Explanation

The highly disturbing fact of domestic violence in Sri Lanka is that most women do not speak up, because they actually believe that this is their fate. That, as a married couple, they have sworn to be together through better or worse and thus must accept all abuse by their spouse silently.
Men sometimes seem to believe that they own the women to whom they are wed. This insight prompted us to use the actual marriage vows as a creative device to drive home the fact that domestic violence is not part of the marriage vows.
