Entry Summary:
Autism is a disability that affects 1 in 80 people worldwide. Autism encompasses a wide spectrum of abilities, causing many people to underestimate the capabilities of people with Autism. Because of this, over 90% of Autistics have difficulty finding employment and often feel discriminated against because of their Autism. We needed to make people realise that the typical habits of Autism, such as extreme focus, obsession and attention to detail can be an advantage.
Script In English:
MUSICVOICEOVERIt takes a pretty brainy dude to defy contemporary science and religion with a single world changing theory. Fortunately for us, Charles Darwin was next level brainy. But the great man who unearthed the truth about where people came from, was not the greatest people person on earth...Despite his super sweet collection of marine invertebrates and cool beetles and stuff, he wasn’t a natural selection for the ladies. He didn’t make a lot of friends during his 5 years on boat, with his obsessive compulsive disorders, fixation on details, and fear of conversation.. which has all lead modern psychologists to believe that old Charlie was probably autistic. But, whatever.. If these qualities enabled him to develop our entire understanding of the natural world, then sweet as. So this Autism Awareness Month, remember, before we knew what autism was, they were shaping history. Let’s not stop them now. Autism NZ. Every step together.
Synopsis:
Against classical music, a narrator describes little known, bizarre habits of Charles Darwin. As he continues he reveals that these quirks enabled Darwin to formulate his Theory of Evolution. Eventually he reveals that while Darwin may have had Autism, his unique traits made his famous work possible. The piece finishes with an appeal to the listener not to doubt people with Autism today, because people with Autism have always shaped history.
