Synopsis:
Every year in Europe alone more then 150 riders die in an avalanche. And each of them is one too many. The Integrated Avalanche System (IAS) is here to make winter-sports beyond slopes safer and more innovative.
We fundamentally rethought today’s avalanche protection systems and disrupted the market by creatively combining existing as well as entirely new technology.
The product is based on the basic observation that most victims of avalanches do not die because of low temperatures or injuries. They suffocate because of their CO2 levels.
Once buried, rescuers have roughly 18 minutes to find the victim. With each additional minute the chances of survival decrease dramatically. However, on average rescuers need 20 minutes to find the victim. Thus in over 80% of all lethal cases the victim suffocates.
So the idea is simple: let’s make best use of creative thinking and technical possibilities to boost the chances of survival.
Not just making one way of protecting better, but tackling the problem from three different sides at the same time:
1) Helping users to stay on top of the avalanche.
2) Helping rescuers to find the victim in shorter time.
3) Helping the buried victim to survive longer without suffocating.
With the new IAS back bag users are able to launch two protection options for the first time ever with only one pull. This fact is vital for success as the time the user has to launch the system is extremely short. Making more than one controlled movement after the launch of an avalanche is unrealistic.
We fundamentally re-thought the technology used to give the user more time to breathe if buried in snow. An all-new mouthpiece and snorkel separates O2 and CO2. Allowing the victim to breath easily for at least 60 minutes. This has been scientifically proven and tested by the university of Konstanz and Freiburg.
Patents were filed in 2015/16. The product was publicly launched in February 2017 at the ISPO in Munich and will be available at stores in winter 2017/18.
