Amazon.com, Inc. is an American internet based retailer of commodities. It is the largest online retailer in the world by total sales and market capitalization. The headquarter is located in Seattle (Washington). In 2015, Amazon exceeded Walmart as the most valuable retailer in the United States by market capitalization, and was the fourth most valuable public company in 2016.


History of Amazon


Amazon company was created in 1994 by an American businessman Jeff Bezos and in 1995 a site was launched. Amazon started as a bookstore. However, in 1998 it began selling records and videos, MP3-records, software, video games, clothes, electronics, furniture, food products and toys.

Amazon has retail websites for the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Netherlands, Japan, China, India, Brazil, Mexico. Amazon also offers international delivery to other countries for some of its products.

Throughout the decade of 2000–2010 Amazon has developed a customer base of around 30 million people. Amazon.com is primarily a retail site with a sales revenue type. Amazon makes the money by retaining a small percentage of the sale price of each item that is sold through its website. Amazon permits companies to advertise their products by paying to be listed as featured products.

In 2012 the corporation purchased Kiva Systems (present Amazon robotics) – a producer of warehouse robots for moving goods in an automatic regime. These robots allowed reducing costs of executing orders by 40%.

In 2014 two offline shops were opened in Manhattan (New York) and San Francisco.

In 2016 Jeff Bezos declared to have executed the first delivery with the help of a remote pilot vehicle.

Sales of Amazon in the first quarter of 2017 reached $35,7 bln. It is 23% more than the in same period in 2016 when the sales were $29,1 bln.


Advertising and Interesting Facts


The name of Amazon was chosen due to several reasons – the River Amazon is the deepest and the company also planned to gain the vastest coverage. Besides bookstores were traditionally enlisted alphabetically that allowed Amazon always to come first on the list.

They meet and laugh and talk and then order the same present for each other. This is a campaign for uniting different cultures, reflecting the problem that exists in the USA now.

Amazon also presents new technologies like the World’s Most Advanced Shopping Technology of buying goods without lines and checkouts only by entering the shop using Amazon App. Such shops are planned to be started in 2017.

By Bezos’ words, Amazon tries to foresee clients’ demands and prevent dissatisfaction. This and the desire to please the customers stimulate the progress of the company.
