Caterpillar is an American manufacturer and seller of machinery and engines. The company was ranked number one in its industry and number 44 overall in the 2009 Fortune 500. The corporation also markets a line of clothing under its Cat name.


History of Caterpillar


Caterpillar Inc. history started in 1925 since the merger of the Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company. In 1910 the corporation moved to Peoria and was run by Pliny Holt. Their track-type tractors played a support role during World War I. In post-war period Caterpillar faced serious challenges because of the Great Depression.

Today the company is known as Caterpillar Inc. Its headquarters are in Peoria, Illinois. Its revenue was $38.5 billion in 2016.

The Caterpillar logo depicts the whole name or simply “CAT”. It includes a yellow triangle. The yellow colour represents joy while the black colour of the letters stands for power. The symbol is based on the Helvetica font family.

Caterpillar’s ads budget was $2.2 billion in 2015.

One of Caterpillar’s campaigns is titled as “Built for it”. It includes a two-minute video which shows how one of the company’s generators can power a Chinese village.

The campaign is also known for a viral hit associated with large-scale Jenga game. When Caterpillar’s “Stack” video reached 1.1 million views on YouTube, Jenga's licenser requested it to be renamed as “Jenga.”

In one of Caterpillar commercials you can see Hafthór Júlíus Björnsson, the actor from Game of Thrones. In the video he is a professional strongman Thor. He has to defeat the D-10 bulldozer. Finally, he loses the battle.

Caterpillar sponsors the No. 31 car in NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. In addition, the company used to sponsor Ocearch. They have performed a global shark research in the ocean. The corporation also supports Ryan Newman.

The Caterpillar Electronics business unit has formed Caterpillar Trimble Control Technologies LLC. This is a 50:50 joint venture with Trimble Navigation which develops electronic guidance and control products.

Plus, the company actively cooperates with Chinese suppliers. Caterpillar was a partner of ABB using their components for the sheet metal processing machines.

In 2017 Caterpillar was ranked #3 among Top 50 Employers according to Careers & disABLED Magazine. It won the 1st prize at ANNY Award in 2016.
