History of PayPal


The history of PayPal started in 1998. Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Luke Nosek and Ken Howery founded a company in U.S. Its name was Confinity and it developed security software for handheld devices. In 1999 Confinity founders launched a money transfer service known as PayPal.

In 2000 PayPal merged with an online banking company X.com and was acquired by eBay later on. However, eBay and PayPal splitted and gone separate ways in 2014. A year later PayPal launched “PayPal.Me” service to send a custom link to request funds via messaging platforms. PayPal’s revenue was $10.84 billion in 2016.

The current logo of PayPal was introduced in 2007. It features the name of the company using Verdana Bold Italic typeface. It includes two different shades of blue. They stand for reliability and approachability of the company.

The most famous slogan of PayPal is “Pay securely. Here, there, anywhere.”


Advertising and Interesting Facts


PayPal’s ads budget was $1.6 million in 2016.

In one of its campaigns PayPal stroke a blow against Apple Pay. PayPal took out a full-page ad in The New York Times saying “We the people want our money safer than our selfies.” They also spread these ads on the Internet.

This campaign featured Jennifer Lawrence. Some critics called it the dumbest ad campaign ever.

In fact “We the People” is the part of a bigger campaign launched in 2015 taglined “People Rule.”

PayPal also launched a series of playful commercials to show how the company could help in everyday life. The message was “PayPal Can Do That.”

Among projects sponsored by PayPal you can find eBay for Charity organization. It gives buyers an opportunity to support their favorite charities when buying and selling. PayPal also supports Humble Bundle, a leading retailer of digital games and eBooks. In addition, the company helps a crowdfunding platform GoFundMe.

PayPal is a partner of Visa. The reason for this cooperation was to extend PayPal’s consumers opportunities. For the same reason PayPal partnered with Discover, a major issuer of credit products in the U.S. Another ally of PayPal is MoneyGram which is responsible for cash withdrawal processes.
