History of Canon

The Canon brand was a brainchild that kicked off in the Japan Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory back in 1937 by pioneers Goro Yoshida, Takeo Maeda, Takeshi Mitarai and Saburo Uchida. During the time, Canon lacked the facilities to produce their optical glass, and they had to incorporate Nippon Kogaku K.K.'s Nikkor lenses (which transitioned into the Nikon Corporation).

In the space of 1933-1936, Canon had produced the “Kwanon” which was a Leica design copy. By 1940 Canon had developed an indirect X-ray camera (a first in Japan). The manufacturing of better and much more modern cameras progressed from there.

Canon's main competitors include Lumia, Olympus, Konica Minolta, Kodak, Epson, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Pentax, etc.

Despite the numerous competition, Canon has managed to remain one of the best optical and imaging products brand.
