eBay is a multinational corporation. It specializes on auction-style sales and provides services to shop all kinds of commodities. Buyers can use this source for free but sellers are charged fees. The company operates in more than 20 countries.


History of eBay


A computer programmer Pierre Omidyar started the history of eBay in California in 1995. He founded a company known as “AuctionWeb”. When Pierre’s Internet provider informed him about too high traffic to his website, he understood that it was time to grow.

In 2000s the company started selling almost any possible item. In 2010 eBay announced it would spinoff PayPal. In 2016 its revenue was $8.97 billion.

The current logo of the company consists of the letters placed in a slightly zigzag manner. The letter B is written in capital. The basic colors of the logo show entertaining nature of the corporation.

“Buy it new, buy it now”
“When it's on your mind, it's on eBay”


Advertising and Interesting Facts


Ads budget of eBay was $2.32 billion in 2016.

One series of their ads showcased clothes sold by such brands as House of Fraser, La Redoute and Very Clearance. The campaign was developed in Germany including outdoor and print media buying.

eBay partnered with Goodby, Silverstein & Partners to improve its sales. The work was supported by magazines, digital vignettes and three rich media publications.

There was a series of eBay commercials known as “Shop the world". It was made to promote the new homepage of the website. The campaign tagline was designed to say that “anywhere you go, anything you see, you can be inspired by the things around you and those things can be instantly shoppable on eBay".

eBay sponsored West Surrey's racing team in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). The team carried eBay branding on its vehicles. The company also was the sponsor of the Antiques Roadshow and Anita Borg Institute.

Dale Jr. partnered with eBay for NNS sponsorship. The company also cooperated with Sellbrite to integrate selling platforms for better selling experience. MallforAfrica.com was another partner of eBay to help African consumers.

eBay was Webby Award winner in 2007 and was recognized at Socially Responsible Awards. The company was also awarded for Corporate Social Responsibility and won the Coaching Award in 2016.
