KFC is the common name for the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants. It is the world’s second largest chain of fast food restaurants which competes against McDonald’s. The company operates in 123 countries.


History of KFC


The restaurant was founded in Kentucky. The person responsible for the beginning of its history was Harland Sanders. When he was 7 years old his mother taught him how to cook. In 1930 he owned a filling station where he also sold food. In 1937 Sanders expanded his restaurant to 142 seats. In 90s the KFC name was used officially.

Today KFC is a subsidiary of “Yum! Brands”. Its revenue was $23 billion in 2013.

The distinctive feature of the KFC logo is Colonel Sanders. Originally his face had a more serious look but today it is designed friendlier. He is shown with a black bow tie, glasses and goatee. Smiling Sanders is placed on a red background.

The most famous slogans of the company are:
Buy a bucket of chicken and have a barrel of fun.
We do chicken right.
Nobody does chicken like KFC.
KFC. So good.


Advertising and Interesting Facts


Ads budget of KFC was $1.5 million in 2013.

The key component of their advertising is Colonel Sanders. Before his death he made appearances in such television programs as “What’s My Line?” and “I’ve Got a Secret.” By 1976 KFC was one of the largest advertisers in the US.

In 1994 the restaurant hired Henderson Forsythe to act as the Colonel in TV commercials entitled “The Colonel’s Way.” However, it wasn’t successful. Later an animated version of the Colonel voiced by Randy Quaid was used.

That year Ogilvy & Mather became KFC’s international agency of record. They used such celebrities as Ivanka Trump, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Ulrika Jonsson in their ads.

In 2001 a campaign featuring Jason Alexander debuted on television with a tagline “There’s fast food. Then there's KFC.”

In 1998 KFC teamed with Nintendo, Game Freak and 4 Kids Entertainment. So-called Pokémon themed promotional days were held in their restaurants.

Since 2010 KFC has been sponsoring the KFC Yum! Center and the Big Bash League Twenty20 cricket tournament. The company has marketed with NASCAR supporting several cars on a limited basis.

Among KFC partners are Japan Airlines, EyeView, Ceylon Theatres, Nike, and more.
