Brief Explanation:
Firsts is an initiative designed to foster an emotional connection with Vodafone by enabling people to do things for the first time, with the help of technology. As part of this series of true stories, we introduced the world to two ladies in their 70s who’d never flown before. Completely different characters, An and Ria were yet to take their first flight. Our aim was to give an intimate and completely different perspective of an experience most of us take for granted.

The 10-minute film is an unobtrusive observational documentary that lovingly follows the nans on their life-changing journey from Amsterdam to Barcelona. The humour and poignancy of the film were created through unusual framing; a rhythmically stylised edit and a careful stripped back score.

Through their experience, we show how it’s never too late to do something for the first time.

Creative Execution:
We posted casting calls across the Netherlands and online, exhaustively searching Dutch nursing homes, care centres, fear of flying organizations, and community centres for older women who had never flown before. We needed a woman who would be willing to try it for the very first time, and who was dynamic and funny on camera but also possessed a fascinating backstory we could explore in our film.

After weeks of searching for women that fit this criteria, we met potential characters and were able to narrow our search down to four strong candidates, of which Ria – the gregarious roller coaster riding nan - became our first cast member. At this stage, we realized we no longer wanted to make a film about one woman, as we originally conceived it, and instead sought out a second character to create contrast within the film.

The others didn't feel right, so we again searched to find a foil for Ria. Eventually we found An – who, unlike Ria, was timid and incredibly apprehensive of flying, but spoke of what she imagined the experience to be like eloquently. We knew she would be the perfect partner to share this experience with loud, brash Ria.
