The Santander Group is a banking group which originating from Spain. The corporation is well-known in Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia. This group is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index.

History of Santander


The history of the company dates back to 1857. The bank was originated in Santander, Spain. In 1991 it merged with Banco Central Hispano and became Banco Santander Central Hispano or simply BSCH. Its chairman was Emilio Botín.

Today the executive chairman of Santander Group is Ana Patricia Botín. Group's revenue in 2015 was 42 billion euro.

Santander’s logo is a bright-red symbol. It is an “S” letter which is stylized as flame. “S” stands for Santander while the red colour shows dynamism and strength of the company. Sometimes “Santander” name is placed close to the symbol.

The most famous slogan of this company is “A Bank of Your Ideas.”

The ads budget of Santander Banks was $35 million in 2013. One of its largest campaigns promoted “Simple, Personal, Fair” message. It was a 90-second series of commercials created by WCRS and Carat.

Among Santander’s ads you could see a fun campaign named as “Keep On, Keeping On”. They have demonstrated how the brand’s philosophy fits in with people’s lives. The commercials have shown how different customers continue to earn everyday value without changing their behavior. The slogan was “Don’t Change Your Life, Change Your Bank!”

Santander also relies on user generated content in one of the multi-channel campaigns. The video content consisted of a real footage shot on a range of devices showing moments of happenings. It was made to demonstrate that money cannot buy happiness.

The bank is also known for a series of prints of a red colour. They depict different symbols like a cup of coffee saying different phrases like “someone woke up on the right side of bed”.

This company is a corporate sponsor of the Ferrari and McLaren Formula One teams. It also sponsors the Copa Libertadores de America, Copa Sudamericana, and the Recopa Sudamericana.

In 2016 the bank was ranked as #37 in the Forbes Global 2000 list of the World's biggest public companies. It was also named “Best Banking Performer, Spain” in 2016 by Global Brands Magazine Award.

In 2000 Banco Santander Central Hispano acquired Grupo Financiero Serfin of Mexico and purchased almost 20% of Sovereign Bank in 2006. In 2007 the bank collaborated with The Royal Bank of Scotland and Fortis.
